What to look for in a cylinder vacuum
The benefits of a cylinder vaccum are that they are compact, lightweight, maneuverable and generally easy to store.
Let’s go through a general checklist so you can get an idea of what your needs are and what characteristics will be most important to you when choosing a cylinder vacuum.
Size and Storage
You may end up choosing the absolute best vacuum cleaner you can find, but if it is too big to store, then it becomes a headache.
Consider the size and shape of the vacuum and where you likely will need to keep it when not in use. They may be compact, but they can end up taking a lot more space than you expect.
If you are in a small flat with limited space, then this could be your biggest consideration when buying your ideal vacuum. How the hose is secured when not in use is also a factor in storage. Hoses that are not clipped to the unit can be unwieldy and make storage awkward.
Weight and Maneuverability
Most cylinder vacuums are lightweight, so generally, you won’t be looking at models which prove to be too heavy for you.
The type of wheel system can make or break how manoeuvrable the vacuum is. If you have lots of furniture or oddly shaped rooms, then this can definitely be a factor in your decision making.
If you are using the vacuum on stairs, then it’s very important to find a vacuum that won’t tip frequently, or is too heavy.
If you live in a small flat then dust capacity might not be a big issue for you. If the area you need to clean is large or it is dustier than average, then you won’t want to be going back forth to the bin every 5 minutes.
An issue not resigned solely to cylinder vacuums is how long the cord is. Cord length can range from 6 to 15 meters. Do you have many sockets? Then cord length probably won’t be an issue.
Type of Flooring
Some cylinder vacuums love cleaning carpet, while others struggle. The reverse, then is also true, where some that work well on carpet might not clean a laminate or wooden floor well. Which type of flooring you have will determine what model vacuum will be best for you.
If you have some rooms carpeted and others floored, then the obvious solution is to find a vacuum that does well on both.
It may seem that a good vacuum should be good for any type of flooring, but this varies wildly between models.
Most new vacuums have a HEPA filter (high-efficiency particulate air) which keeps allergens from blowing around the room while vacuuming. If the model doesn’t have a HEPA filter and you are allergic to dust mites, or pet dander, then you may want to avoid models that don’t trap allergens in the cylinder.
Since most cylinder vacuums don’t have motorised brush bars that you find on upright vacuums, it is very important to look closely to make sure you have the right cylinder vacuum for pet hair. Make sure at a very minimum the vacuum comes with a turbo brush accessory that can get most pet hair.
It may still struggle with long dog hair and if you have a pet that sheds a lot, then even the brush may not be enough. You’ll need a vacuum with very high suction.
Generally speaking a higher wattage motor means a more powerful motor. This may or may not be important to you, however as higher wattage rarely means more suction power. Vacuum suction power comes from the design more so than the power of the motor.
Higher wattage does help cylinder vacuums since it takes more power to get the air up through a long tube and then back down into the canister.
Another benefit of using cylinder vacuums is that they are less noisy than most uprights. That said though, some can flirt with 80dB, which is the highest allowable decibel rating by the European Union. Will Brexit mean your vacuum will get louder? My crystal ball says probably not.
Lastly, the cost of cylinder vacuums will likely be the biggest factor in your decision-making process.
The saying that you get what you pay for almost always holds true. Don’t let that make you think that the most expensive cylinder vacuum is also the best one. Sometimes you are paying for accessories that you may not want or need, rather than performance.
Your individual needs will play a great part in how much you pay for a cylinder vacuum.
With all these factors in mind, let’s rate the best cylinder vacuum by category.

Best Cylinder Vacuum For Pet Hair
Blizzard CX1 Cat & Dog PowerLine
- Excellent pet-hair cleaning
- Very quiet
- Excellent suction on floor and carpet
- Easy to clean dust box
- HEPA filter is self cleaning
- 4 power levels
- 10 meter cleaning radius
- Caster wheels
- Telescopic hose
- Air powered rotating brush head
- At 8 kilos is quite heavy
- Large profile
Whether or not you have a pet doesn’t even matter you won’t be disappointed with the Miele Blizzard CX1!
My favourite thing about it is the 900w of cleaning power it has. It can actually be too powerful and start pulling at your carpet!
Luckilly it has 4 different power levels so it won’t start eating up your carpet, but if you have some stubborn dog hair tangles to get out the carpet this will definitely manage. You’ll be amazed at how new your carpets look after you use it.
The floorhead has a brush on it which beats dust out of the carpet for a really deep clean and on hard floors the power is enough to suck up everything it comes across.
There’s also the all-important HEPA filter which cleans the air while you vacuum taking allergens out of the air. And it’s self cleaning so you’ll never have to worry about changing it.
A downside is that it weights 8kg so is a real pain to get upstairs and it’s quite bulky for putting away in the cupboard. But the great thing is that it runs super quietly at only 72db. So you can keep pets in the other room without them freaking out quite so heavily.
The final really cool things are that it’s designed so that when you open up the canister to empty it so you don’t get a dust cloud. You just lift the whole case out bring it to the bin and it opens from the bottom. Easy!
Overall, A fantastic cylinder vacuum that will make short work of pet hair. A little heavy but it has unrivaled cleaning power.
Best Bagless Cylinder Vacuum
With today’s fast paced life, it leaves little time for hoovering, and even less time to go buy vacuum bags for your vacuum.
Bagless vacuums are no less powerful than their bagged counterparts, so there is no real reason to go for a bagged vacuum again.
Bagless SilentPerformer Vacuum Cleaner
- Optimised for silence
- ErgoShock bumper to keep furniture from getting damaged
- Easy empty system dust box
- Works great on floors and carpets
- Three-in-one tool dusting brush
- Parketto Pro hard floor nozzle for different types of flooring
- Ergonomic handle is shaped for easy control
- Washable hygiene filter
- Short cord at 6 meters
- Accessories attach to the hose not the body
This AEG Bagless Cylinder Vacuum Cleaner promises a quieter and deeper clean than most other vacuums?
Does it manage?
I’d say so! It runs at 72db which is on par with the other quietest vacuum cleaners around, a quiet motor and a special Dustpro silent nozzle keeps it quiet on any surface.
I also really liked that it has a double filiter process, it’s got a HEPA filter and a CleanAir Hygiene filter. Between the two less than 0.02% of absorbed dirt is discharged again so this could mean that house stays cleaner on the long run because less dust is going back into the air after you vacuum.
It weighs about 7kg so it’s not the lightest but it’s comfortable enough to pull around the house. And it’s wheels are soft so they won’t scratch up hardfloor but they still roll on carpet too.
Plus there’s a bumper round it to protect the walls and furniture, so if you’re as clumsy a vacuumer as I am then you’ll love it.
The motor is powerful enough to deal with light pet hair, but if you have a dog with long hair that likes to shed then you’ll need something more powerful.
Overall, strong suction and silent running make this a really great bagless cylinder vacuum.
Best Cylinder Vacuum For Carpets
Ultimate Bagless Cylinder Vacuum Cleaner
- Very good on carpets
- Energy efficiency class A
- Ultra Clean Air with the HEPA 13 Filter
- Powerful Suction Performance
- Large 2.2 litre bagless canister
- Tri-active 3-in-1 nozzle
- Extra-Ergonomic Dust Bucket
- Large Profile
What once needed a 2,400-watt motor to get the level of suction from this vacuum, now only needs a 650-watt motor. Thanks to a dramatic improvement in technology, the Philips Ultimate Bagless Cylinder vacuum is the best for cleaning carpets.
Enjoy a professional level of clean thanks to the powerful suction, the reduction of dust and allergens and the top-notch accessories. It does pack a hefty price tag, but there is not much competition to knock it off its perch for being the best at cleaning carpets.
It’s also got the much-loved HEPA filter that cleans the air while you vacuum. And the suction even makes short work of pet hair in the thickest of carpets. The bottom of the head is also textured which helps loosen up dirt and give an even deeper carpet clean.
And if you have any smaller areas of wood or laminate it has a hard floor head so it can deal with that too. Really handy for going around the kitchen.
Overall, Really strong suction and a head designed for carpet you can’t get a better cylinder vacuum for carpet.
Best Lightweight Cylinder Vacuum Cleaner
Using a cylinder vacuum for its manoeuvrability can only be an advantage if you can actually carry it around, or it is lightweight enough to be pulled behind you without much effort.
ZAN7880UKE Cyclon Clean Pet Bagless Cylinder Vacuum Cleaner
- Includes turbo nozzle, crevice nozzle, dusting brush and combination floor nozzle
- Powerful bagless cleaner with 1.8 L dust capacity
- Washable HEPA filter
- Adjustable Floorhead
- Foot operated cord rewind
- Cleans pet hair
- 800watts of power
- Very short 4.5 meter cord
- No suction power control
At a little over 6 kilos, the Zanussi Cyclon Clean is lightweight enough to be carried when cleaning and glides over carpets easily. And that is without sacrificing any power. You get a lot of suction in a small package.
Besides, being an Italian company it’s no surprise that this cylinder vacuum is pretty to look at! It has a modern, yet classic look to it. If you mistakenly leave it out of the closet when you have guests, you may end up with a surprising conversation piece!
But not only does it look great, it cleans great too!
It’s designed for pet hair so you know you’re going to get powerful suction but it works particularly well on carpet. Not quite as well on hardfloor but still good enough in my opinion.
It’s got a nice low profile so it won’t tip over and is ofcourse nice and light to carry around.
The cannister for collecting the dust is also nice and big so you don’t have to empty it too often and it has the HEPA filter for nice clean air while you vacuum.
Overall, An ideal choice for anyone needing a lightweight cylinder vacuum clenear. Easy to carry around but still with plenty of cleaning power.
