Cordless electric strimmers are great. They are lightweight, quiet, and easy to use so make the perfect garden tool for an urban setting. They give you a lot more freedom than a corded model does and they don’t emit nasty fumes like a petrol one.
Battery-operated strimmers are a versatile option for lawn care but, like most garden tools, you get what you pay for. These strimmers can vary widely in what they can manage and how useful they are as strimmers.
To help you decide on the best cordless strimmer for your garden I’ve put together this review article on the best models out there. Having personally tested dozens of Strimmers and Brush Cutters I’ve narrowed down the list to the best cordless electric strimmers right here in the UK. I even came back in 2024 to update to the latest and greatest models.

Top 5 Best Cordless Electric Strimmers
- Top Choice – BLACK+DECKER STC1820PC-GB Cordless 28 cm String Grass Trimmer
- Runner Up – Einhell Cordless Lawn Trimmer
- Most Powerful – Hyundai 40v Battery, Cordless Grass Trimmer
- Best Budget Option – VonHaus Cordless Grass Trimmer
- Best For Lawn Edges – Webb 20 Volt Cordless Grass Trimmer
1. Top Choice – BLACK+DECKER STC1820PC-GB Cordless 28 cm String Grass Trimmer

Brand: Black + Decker
Battery Power: 36V and 2.0Ah
Speed: 5500-7500RPM
Cutting Width: 28cm
Blades/String: Line Trimmer
Weight: 2.6kg
Pros
- Good run time
- Autodfed spool
- Eco and turbo modes available
- Excellent 30cm cutting width
Cons
- 5-hour charge time
- Might need a second battery for very large gardens
In the top spot today we have the popular brand Black+Decker with this effective line trimmer. The lithium-ion battery can manage up to 2500 linear meters of cutting power when the battery is fully charged. The 7500rpm max spin speed is perfect for tougher grass and some weeds so will neaten up any area after the lawnmower has finished its job.
E-drive technology is a high torque gear system that can power through tough grass without clogging up. It also has a power selection so you can adjust it between eco mode for normal trimming to save battery life and turbo mode to cut thicker grass.
It has an auto-feed spool which keeps the line topped up as needed. This saves stopping and starting and the 30cm cutting diameter gets the job done quickly.
This trimmer is a powerful and effective garden tool and the ergonomic handle plus lightweight body makes it easy to use. It’s great for trimming long grass as well as an edger tool and is an all-round, brilliant product. The edger tool was a lifesaver when it came to trimming up my wife’s flower beds.
2. Runner Up – Einhell Cordless Lawn Trimmer

Brand: Einhell
Battery Power: 18V and 2.0Ah
Speed: 8500RPM
Cutting Width: 24cm
Blades/String: Plastic Blades
Weight: 2.15kg
Pros
- Blade cutting so no tangled feed
- Lightweight
- Simple to use
- Good price
Cons
- Not designed for edging
- Best for grass only
In second place we have Einhell with their answer to battery-powered trimmers. This lithium battery-powered trimmer is very easy to use thanks to the telescopic handle and the second adjustable handle which gives you excellent control. I went for it as a runner-up over the Black+Decker above because it struggles a little with tough weeds and can’t do edging as simply.
But the cutting head is made from sturdy plastic blades that will deliver a good cutting swathe with each use. The universal, 18V battery can be used in a number of different power tools like the Einhell hedge trimmer and power drill so is a great option if you have any of these already.
This is a good garden strimmer with plenty of power to get through thick, long grass but isn’t so well designed for edging. It’s perfect for tidying up the lawn or for use in small gardens with thick grass as a mini-mower.
3. Most Powerful – Hyundai 40v Battery, Cordless Grass Trimmer

Brand: Hyundai
Battery Power: 40V and 2.5Ah
Speed: 6300-8000RPM
Cutting Width: 33cm
Blades/String: Line Trimmer
Weight: 3.9kg
Pros
- Wide cutting area
- Adjustable head useful for edging
- Plant guard for flowerbeds
Cons
- A little pricey
- No edging wheel for precision
For more heavy-duty strimming, this powerful string trimmer by Hyundai will be up to the job. The automatic line feed system will maintain that 33cm cutting width for you and the telescopic shaft means this strimmer can adjust to fit you. I’ve used strimmers where when the line runs down you have to take the spool out and manually pull out more wire. A pain in the bottom to put it politely.
180-degree adjustable head makes this an ideal edger as well. It can strim for a runtime of up to 25 minutes and then it’s 80 minutes of charging time and you’re good to go again. The 40v and 2.5 Ah lithium-ion battery is one of the most powerful cordless grass strimmer options out there. And 80 minutes is the time to fully charge so you can charge for 30 minutes if it’s dead and make it around a small garden easily.
It comes with a plant guard to keep those flowerbeds neat and the powerful battery technology means this can handle large gardens if you don’t mind waiting for the batteries to charge.
4. Best Budget Option – VonHaus Cordless Grass Trimmer

Brand: VonHaus
Battery Power: 20V and 1.5Ah
Speed: 8500RPM
Cutting Width: 25cm
Blades/String: Plastic Blades
Weight: 2.7kg
Pros
- Fast 1-hour recharge
- Excellent price
- Lightweight
- Ideal for lawn edges
Cons
- Not useable as a brush cutter
- Not the most powerful
If the price is the top consideration then be wary when looking for a new electric strimmer. A lot of the apparently very cheap options are sold as the body of the strimmer only, with no battery or charger included. This strimmer by VonHaus has the best of both worlds. It was very cheap and it comes with the battery and charger included in the price!
The 20v max battery has a runtime (no load) of up to 50 minutes and is rechargeable in 1 hour so you can cover fairly large areas with it. The cutting head uses strong nylon blades and has a plant protector, an edge guide wheel plus an adjustable head for neat edging. Why is that better than the Hyundai? Simply because it’s not as powerful. The Hyundai outstrips the Vonhaus in cutting ability but it does cost more.
The pole is adjustable so you can set it to a comfortable height for you and the rubber, soft-grip handles make it comfortable to use.
It’s not the most powerful model and you won’t have much luck using it as a brush cutter to tackle brambles. It is a lightweight, ergonomic design that’s pleasant to use and will give your lawn beautiful neat edges after you mow.
5. Best For Lawn Edges – Webb 20 Volt Cordless Grass Trimmer

Brand: Webb
Battery Power: 20V and 2.0Ah
Speed: 8500RPM>;o?
Cutting Width: 25cm
Blades/String: Line Trimmer
Weight: 2.2kg
Pros
- Fast cutting speed
- Flower guard
- Can rotate head 90 degrees for edging
Cons
- A little flimsy
- Won’t do tough stuff like brambles
If you’re looking for the best cordless strimmer to produce neat edges to your lawn then look no further. This Webb cordless model with a 20v battery is perfectly designed for the job. With a fast cutting speed and automatic line feed, this strimmer will power through long grass without any hassle. I prefer the Black+Decker as it’s more versatile but the guard on this does make it a supremely good choice for edging.
The flower guard will protect your flowerbeds, vegetable patch, and any delicate ornaments from the spinning line and it has an edging guide wheel to help you achieve a beautifully straight finish.
The cutting head is very easily adjusted from trimmer to edger by simply twisting the shaft so you can easily cope with those tricky areas like under and around trampolines.
It’s a really effective little strimmer with the power of a corded model and the freedom of a petrol strimmer. All this and the price is really great too!
Electric Strimmer Buying Guide
Battery Life
The battery life of your electric strimmer is an important consideration when buying the tool. A short battery life will mean you have to stop more often to recharge the batteries so will take longer to cover a wide area.
Most cordless strimmers will run for up to 30-45 minutes on a full charge. This time will be affected by how much work the strimmer needs to do (ie long or thick grass will mean more power needed) as well as grass conditions such as wet vs dry grass.
The time needed to recharge the battery can be anywhere from 1 – 5 hours so if you have a large area needing done, you’ll want a battery that’s quicker to recharge.
Battery Power
The power of the battery indicates how well it will cut the grass. A more powerful battery will cut through grass easier so will get through a larger area quicker.
The power of the battery is given in both volts and amp hours. To keep it simple, the voltage is similar to the power the battery needs to work, and the amp hours are how long it can go for. For example, a 36v battery with 2.5Ah will be a lot more powerful and work for longer than a 20v battery with 1.0Ah.
Area Needing Trimmed
The area of grass needing to be trimmed must be considered in relation to the power of the battery and the cutting width it can handle. A larger area and you will need a more powerful battery plus a larger cutting width. If you have a small area needing done or it’s very narrow then you’ll want a strimmer with a smaller cutting diameter.
Blades vs Line
Electric trimmers generally come in two forms. Line trimmers or plastic blades. The line trimmers do break easily but a simple spool feed system will keep it topped up so you can keep on working despite a small break in the line.
The plastic blades are pretty effective at cutting grass but if you hit a solid object they break very easily. You have to stop strimming to replace them so it can add a bit of time and hassle to your day. The plastic blades are also prone to getting clogged up with longer grass so this can be a pain.
Weight
The strimmer needs to be light enough that whoever is using it can do so without struggling. The benefit of cordless electric strimmers is they are generally very lightweight by design. I’ve included all the weights in the product description so you can make sure you choose one that will suit you.
Accessories/Extras
Edging wheels, flower guards, ergonomic handles, auto feed, and power adjustment are some of the many features that electric trimmers have. These can all help make your job easier and leave you with a tidy lawn.
F.A.Q.s
Are battery-powered Strimmers any good?
Battery-powered strimmers are lightweight, quiet, easy to use, and have excellent maneuverability. They can get to places that corded strimmers can’t manage and are much nicer to use compared to petrol ones. The downside is, they’re nowhere near as powerful as a petrol strimmer and the batteries don’t last very long.
What’s the difference between a trimmer and a strimmer?
There’s actually no real difference between a trimmer and a strimmer. Different brands will classify certain products as one or the other but the word strimmer is actually just a contraction of the words grass-trimmer.
Are Strimmers with plastic blades any good?
The plastic blade grass trimmers are tougher and more durable than line-fed ones (even dual-line ones). They can handle tougher plants but they do break when they hit solid objects. They’re also prone to getting clogged up with longer grass and can be a pain to stop and sort them out.
How long do cordless trimmers last?
Cordless trimmers usually last about 30-45 minutes of continuous use (1 hour being the upper limit). The batteries can take anywhere between 1hr to 5 hrs to charge so this can slow down the job at hand quite significantly.
Can a strimmer cut long grass?
For longer grass and weeds, an electric strimmer generally isn’t powerful enough. You really need a petrol strimmer to handle these tougher jobs.
