Top 5 Best Electric Lawnmowers UK
- Top Choice – Bosch Advanced Rotak 36-550
- Best Cordless pick – Bosch Rotak 32R Electric Lawn Mower
- Best Corded Pick – Flymo Speedi-Mo 360C Electric Wheeled Lawn Mower
- Best Small – Flymo Turbo Lite 270 Electric Hover Lawn Mower
- Best Budget Pick – Hyundai Lightweight HYM3200E Corded Electric
1. Top Choice – Bosch Cordless Lawnmower Advanced Rotak 36-550
Brand: Bosch
Cable Length: No cable!
Pros
- 2 batteries so you can use one and charge one
- Quiet mowing technology
- Height adjustable handle
- Can collect and shred leaves
Cons
- A little pricey
- Heavier than other electric mowers
- Batteries need to be kept indoors
If you’re looking for an electric lawnmower then you’re going to want to go cordless in my opinion. Much easier to get across your lawn with no extension cable. Current batteries have plenty of run time to get around even a large garden (around 50 minutes) and no chance of cutting across your own cable.
I like the Bosch Rotak 550 because it comes with 2 batteries so you can use one and charge the other, plus they fit into the other Bosch garden tools.
Depends on conditions and your grass but you should be able to get 660 square meters out of one charge which will do most people. Any more than that and you’ll want to consider a petrol mower.
This bosch also comes with quiet run technology which makes it 60% quieter than previous models and it’s got a leaf collector and shredder which will make your life so much easier come autumn time.
Everything you could want from an electric mower, is easily the top choice out there.
2. Runner up – Bosch Rotak 32R Electric Lawn Mower
Brand: Bosch
Cable Length: 10 M
Power: 1200 W
Pros
- 31L Grass Cuttings Box
- Lightweight
- Edge Cutting
- Easy To Assemble
- Cuts Long Grass
Cons
- When You Empty The Box Grass Cuttings Fall Out
The only downside to this great electric lawn mower is that every time you take the box off the back to empty the clippings some of them fall out. Not heaps but there’s always some.
There may be some sort of witchcraft you can do to get the grass cuttings box off without spilling any of the contents but I haven’t figured it out.
Just something to be aware of!
But in my opinion, it’s a small price to pay for this fantastic lawn mower. It’s nice and powerful at 1200w and is super lightweight so it’s really comfortable to use.
What’s really cool is the edge cutting which means you can cut right up the edge of the grass. Which means that you don’t need a strimmer! (well, unless you’re super persnickety about having a perfect lawn then you might want one anyway.
The motors also have power drive technology which means it can handle long grass too!
Overall, easy to see why it’s such a popular mower, powerful, lightweight, and a fantastic price.
3. Best Corded Pick – Flymo Speedi-Mo 360C Electric Wheeled Lawn Mower
Brand: Flymo
Cable Length:12m
Power: 1400w
Pros
- 36 cm cutting width
- 20-60 mm cutting height adjustment
- good for smaller gardens and medium lawns
- Lightweight
Cons
- No attachment to store cable
There are a lot of things to like about this electric mower, it’s very ergonomically designed, having a folding handle and a carry handle. But the height settings are easily adjusted.
It comes with either a vision window or no vision window which lets you see if it’s full, they’re the same price so I’d go with the vision window.
It’s good at cutting, collecting and mulching to allow you to keep going between emptying with the help of the 40-litre grass box and its 12 m cable is plenty for small lawns and medium lawns alike. Although you’d get on fine on a large lawn if you have a wind-up extension lead.
Overall, enjoy mowing made easy and make your garden clean-up that much more hassle-free
4. Best Small Choice – Flymo Turbo Lite 270 Electric Hover Lawn Mower
Brand: Flymo
Cable Length:10m
Power: 1400w
Pros
- Lightweight
- Powerful
- 427 cm cutting width
- 11-31 cm cutting height
Cons
- No Grass Box
This Flymo hover mower is quite cool really because it has slight hover technology, air is blown underneath the mower which lifts it up and lets you push it around easily even though it doesn’t have wheels.
This, of course, makes it nice and small so you can store it away easily even if you don’t have much space.
The biggest downside is that there’s no grass box for collecting the cuttings, so if you have really long grass you’ll notice grass absolutely everywhere.
So best to keep on top of it so you can mulch the cut grass and it feeds back into the grass keeping it nice and lush.
It’s nice and light as well so you can carry it around without much problem and it’s super light to actually push around the garden as well. If you’ve got a big garden you’ll need something a little bigger but for a small garden it’ll be great.
The cord is 10m long which isn’t the longest but again ideal if you just have a small or even a medium garden.
Overall, a great small electric lawn mower, lightweight and easy to use it’s perfect for small to medium gardens.
5. Best Budget Pick – Hyundai Lightweight HYM3200E Corded Electric
Brand: Hyundai
Cable Length:10m
Power: 1000w
Pros
- 25mm 45mm & 65mm cutting heights
- 25L grass collection box
- 32cm cutting width
- Ultra-lightweight
Cons
- Requires assembly
- Not as powerful
I really like this as the budget choice, it’s Hyundai so you know some quality has gone into it even though the price is low. Too low and you’re buying a lemon so this is perfect.
There is some assembly required which is a little annoying but very manageable, it still has a 3-year guarantee to keep you cutting grass for many summers to come.
The motor is lower power at 1000W but that’s still enough to cut a medium or smaller lawn which compliments the smaller 25L grass collector that provides easier storage too.
It’s got an ergonomic design and is very lightweight at 8.8kg so pushing it around the garden is a breeze. As is heaving it out of your garage after winter has buried it.
Overall, A fine budget choice that will keep your grass in control easily
Advantages of electric lawn mower
Electric Lawn Mowers have a lot of advantages over their petrol counterparts. I just wanted to quickly run through and let you know what some of them are!
They’re Cheaper
Electric lawn mowers are cheaper both in the initial price and the amount it costs to keep them running.
It, of course, depends on your electricity tariff but generally, it’s a lot cheaper to pay for electricity than it is to pay for petrol!
You Just Plug In And Go
They’re the easiest to use by far, you don’t have to sit pulling a cord endlessly trying to get it to start. You just switch it on and go.
No Servicing/Less Maintenance
You occasionally have to service petrol lawn mowers, making sure all the parts are clean and working stuff like that.
Now some people love doing this, getting in and about the motor making sure everything’s clean (or oily) and working. Taking it apart, putting it back together hoping there are no spares left.
But I know a lot of people aren’t into this so if that sounds like the least fun way you can spend a Saturday morning then an electric mower is definitely the way to go for you.
Lighter
Because there’s no big petrol motor on the inside electric lawn mowers are normally a lot lighter, as such easier to push around the garden.
This is particularly good if you have hills to deal with.
More Eco Friendly
It’s sort of hand in hand with being more cost-efficient, using less fuel makes them a lot more eco-friendly than their petrol equivalents.
Disadvantages of Electric Lawn Mower
The Cord
The biggest disadvantage has to be the power cord itself.
It can cause a lot of problems because it’s trailing along behind you. You have to make sure it’s long enough so it can reach all your garden, or get a nice long extension cable.
Aaaand, you have the big danger that you run over the cord and cut it in half. That way it just won’t work at all. Disaster!
If you have a lot of obstacles in your garden it can be a bit annoying, flower beds, trees, and playthings. But if it’s big areas of grass you’ll get along perfectly.
Not As Powerful As Petrol Models
Finally, electric mowers just aren’t as powerful as petrol ones. They just don’t have as much juice in them. But, you’ll get your grass cut and that’s what counts!
Must Haves of An Electric Lawn Mower
Long cable
You, of course, want a nice long cable so you can reach all of your gardens! Not much point if you can’t.
If you’ve got a small garden you might get away with just using the cable built into the mower.
But if you’re looking for an electric lawn mower for large gardens then you’ll likely have to accept that you’re going to need a long extension cable to reach the whole thing.
Enough Power
It varies by model but as a rough guide, you’re going to want about 1000w or more of power. If it’s just a small electric lawn mower you can probably get away with less but that’s a good rough guide to stick with.
Big Enough Grass Cuttings Box
Again pretty self-explanatory. If you have a big garden you’re going to want a nice big box on the back to catch all the trimmings.
You might still need to empty it a few times if you have a particularly big garden as a heads up.
As a benchmark about 30L is a good size. Smaller for small gardens and bigger for large gardens. Simple!
Adjustable Cutting Heights
I don’t think I’ve ever come across a mower that doesn’t have adjustable cutting heights but I thought I’d include it anyway.
Because if you do find one that doesn’t stay well clear!

Other Electric Lawnmower Reviews
Edge-Max Intelli Cable Mower
Brand: Black+Decker
Cable Length: 16m
Power: 1800W
Pros
- 50L Grass Box
- Extra Long Power Cable
- Intelli Cable Protection
- 6 Cutting Heights
- Wide Cutting Plane
Cons
- Quite Heavy For An Electric Mower
This was one of the best lawnmowers but unfortunately, it’s no longer available.
First off, I’m sure you’re wondering what an intelli cable system is. Well, the cable is in a sliding attachment on a bar near the handle.
This means every time you turn the cable slides away from the turning side making it (almost) impossible for the cable to get caught under the blades. A really handy feature if you’re as forgetful as I am.
It’s also got a powerful 1800-watt motor and a 16m long cable making it ideal for large gardens. Very large gardens may still need an extension cable but that’s just a fate you’re doomed to I’m afraid!
It is quite heavy for an electric mower so it’s a bit harder to push around but the extra weight also makes it a little easier to control.
And to help out with big gardens, even more, this model has a nice wide 42 cm cutting width and a 50L grass box to collect heaps of trimmings.
Lastly, we’ve got the all-important Edge-Max technology which means you can mow right up to the edges of your lawn and don’t need a strimmer.
Overall, even if you don’t have a large garden this is a fantastic electric lawn mower. Very powerful, easy to use and a nice long cable.
High Power Push Electric Mower
Brand: BLAUPUNKT
Cable Length: 10m
Power: 1300w
Pros
- Oversized Rear Wheels
- 35L Grass Bin
- 5 Cutting Heights
Cons
- Shortish 10m Cable
It’s not the longest cable at 10 meters but it is plenty big enough for small gardens.
A nice 35L grass bin is ideal for all the trimming you collect and it has 5 cutting heights so you can get the length of grass you want.
But the best thing about this Blaupunkt Electric mower is that it has oversized rear wheels!
Why does that matter?
Because it gives you much more control while you’re steering it and means it doesn’t bump around nearly as much if you go over any uneven ground.
The grips are nice and comfortable too so you won’t feel any fatigue while you’re going around the garden.
Overall, a great choice of electric lawn mower for small gardens. Comfortable to use and nice and powerful.
Easimo Electric Mower
Brand:Flymo
Cable Length: 10m
Power: 900w
Pros
- Lightweight
- Great Price
- Cuttings Get Compacted
Cons
- Feels A little Cheap
- Doesn’t handle long wet grass
This Flymo is a really cheap price, but that comes at the cost that it does feel a little cheap when you use it.
You can tell there’s a lot of plastic involved.
But the important question is will it cut the grass?
Yes, it will!
It’ll struggle in the long wet grass but apart from that it quite comfortably makes its way around the garden. I wouldn’t fancy using it on a large garden but for small gardens, it’s absolutely perfect.
The cable is 10m which isn’t great but long enough for small gardens and the price is great if you don’t have a lot of grass you want to cut.
What is cool is that the grass cuttings get compacted into the grass box on the back.
This means they take up less space in the bin and don’t fly around nearly as much when you’re trying to empty it.
Overall, a great cheap electric lawn mower for small gardens. A great price though it doesn’t feel the most sturdy.
VonHaus Budget Electric Lawn Mower
Brand: VonHaus
Cable Length: 10m
Power: 1000w
Pros
- Great Price
- Powerful Cut
- 30L Grass box
- Lightweight
Cons
- Collection Box Feels A Little Flimsy
The VonHaus budget lawn mower is perfect for anyone looking to cut smaller areas of grass so don’t want to spend a lot.
It’s nice and powerful for the price range and has plenty of big cutting boxes for the trimmings.
The grass box seems a little flimsy but it won’t fall off and will hold all your cuttings so it’s more superficial than a real problem.
The wheels are very solid so it’s only really good for nice flat gardens, otherwise, you’ll be running back and forth over lumps from different angles trying to get them cut.
Overall, a nice mower for the price, powerful enough and easy to use.
Bosch Cordless Rotak 430 Li Ergoflex Electric lawn Mower
Brand: Bosch
Cable Length: No cable!
Pros
- Cuts 600 m2 of Lawn
- 2 Batteries
- 70 Minute Charge Time
- Lightweight
Cons
- Have To Charge Battery To Use
- Expensive
Now the most important part of this is the run time. If you need to charge it up you don’t want it cutting out on you halfway through your garden.
Well, Bosch seems quite resistant to giving a runtime but they say about 300 square meters per battery. Which equates to about 30-45 minutes depending on how long the grass is.
So with the 2 batteries that are included, it’s long enough to manage most gardens large or small. But if you do have a big garden make sure the other batter is in charge while you use the first.
And the charge time is given as 70 minutes but that’s too about 80% charges, you’ll need 140 minutes to get it fully charged.
I’m not fully for cordless mowers (maybe you could tell) because they have some serious limitations because of the battery for how expensive they are.
That said if you want a cordless lawn mower then the Bosch Rotak 430 Li is the one to go for. It has by far the best runtime, enough power for great cutting and it’s really comfortable to use.
Overall, a fantastic choice and easily the best cordless lawnmower.
F.A.Q
Are electric mowers any good?
It depends on your criteria but generally, they absolutely are. Petrol mowers are more powerful, and if they’re well-kept to avoid rust they’ll last longer too. But Electric lawnmowers are cheaper, lighter, easier to move around and have less upkeep so you get the good with the bad.
How long do electric lawn mowers last?
You should get a good 10 years out of an electric mower if it’s well-kept, cleaned out each winter and such. But if you go for a cordless you’re only going to get 5 years before the batteries need to be replaced, with a drop off in performance each year.
Is it safe to cut wet grass with an electric mower?
It’s generally not recommended to cut wet grass with an electric mower.
Do electric lawn mowers need oil?
Nope, electric mowers don’t need any oil to keep them functioning properly. you just have to keep them plugged in if they’re corded and the batteries charged up if they’re cordless.
Conclusion
I hope this guide has helped, and for a final bit of advice you can’t go wrong with a Bosch if you’re in the market for electric but Flymo also does some great electric mower and has had many a happy customer for years and years.
